I visited a child welfare home named Ankuram on June 8, 2007 as part of a firm-wide initiative where we offer community service during our work hours. And I am stuck there since then.. have left a part of my soul and heart amongst those kids who have just the bare necessities which we take for granted each day and still they were so happy to have us as their visitors, presenting a welcome dance for us and singing songs for us. Here's a brief intro of this organization taken from their Web site...
ANKURAM is a non-profitable and secular organization established by a group of young women activists who are collectively engaged in women’s movement
ANKURAM has been working with children at Children Home, Special Home and Observation Home for Girls in association with Department of Juvenile Welfare and Correctional Services for Street children in Andhra Pradesh.
Life in its simplest form .. kids with smiles on their faces... lacking so many things but stil blissfully unaware of it .. yet there were many a kids whose eyes revealed a sad story... a new kid who had been in the special home for just the last five days had been bitten by a dog and she was scared...
We also conducted a health camp which revealed many children to be underweight and some of them suffering from viral fever, jaundice, molluscum contagiosum and thyroid related disorders without the staff or the kids ever knowing that they have been afflicted by these ailments. But with the limited resources that we were provided by our organization we could only do so much.. just diagnosed those kids of those ailments and the doctor wrote out a prescription, but I am not very sure if those kids are ever going to get those prescriptions filled, get their diseases treated and lead a normal, healthy life.
This is an attempt to call for help from any of you guys who are interested in donating anything.. be it money, clothes, stationery or just some time from your busy schedule to spend wtih them and to have a look at their surroundings yourself.
Visit www.ankuram.org and read more about Ankuram.. just to assure you that such a place does exist...
In a few days' time I will be posting some pictures taken during this trip.
If any of you guys are interested in helping these kids in any way, please contact me on mailsforankuram@gmail.com
